Staged reading - with songs - of "19", an amazing musical-in-progress

June 12, 2018 Jameson Freeman

19, written and directed by Jennifer Schwed and Doug Bradshaw, with music composed by Charlie Barnett, is the dynamic and little-known story of Alice Paul, the suffragists and their fight to get women the right to vote— the 19th Amendment. The inspirational story of these fearless women is brought to life through jazz, spoken word, dance and audience interaction. FABUM presented a staged reading on Saturday, June 9th at the Arts Club of Washington of the newly revised Act I, including all 19 songs with piano accompaniment by composer Charlie Barnett!

Special guests included Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, and FABUM facilitated a talkback with the audience and the playwrights, composer and cast.

Washington, DC: On Wednesday May 2nd, author Wendy Lesser, winner of this year’s Marfield Prize (also known as the National Award for Arts Writing), stopped by the School Without Walls High School for a discussion on art, architecture and writing. Lots of great questions and creative engagement! Her book is You Say to Brick: The Life of Louis Kahn.

FABUM coordinates speakers and activities in partnership with SWW and DC Public Schools, and launched its Youth Program for a Better Understanding in 2012 as a creative extracurricular and in-classroom engagement program. The organization also maintains an internship program with the school.
